Sabiha Husić – Woman of the World

On 19th of November, 2014  at the Awards Gala event held at The Museum of Natural History in New York, Sabiha Husić M. Sc., director of „Medica“ Zenica received the „Woman of the World“ Award for 2014.  The „Woman of the World“ Award recognizes courageous women who speak out on behalf of the most marginalized women and girls who are socially, economically and politically excluded, and it is awarded by the international organization „Women for Women International“.

This world Award and recognition have been honored to Sabiha Husić for her extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment to helping women and children victims/survivors of war and post-war violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and for her work elevating violence against women as a crisis the world is currently facing.

During the Gala ceremony, Amjad Atallah, co-founder of the Women for Women International and Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy UNHCR spoke about Sabiha Husić’s exceptional and dedicated work and her accomplishments.

Past honorees have included Hilary Clinton, Christiane Amanpour, Aloisea Inyumba, and Honorata Kizende.

It is important to mention that Sabiha Husić has been for almost 22 years working in „Medica“ Zenica as a psychotherapist/theologian, and since 2007 has been successfully leading independent nongovernmental organization „Medica“ Zenica. Sabiha Husić took the position of the director of „Medica“ Zenica in the time of the most difficult financial crisis and possibility of closing down that „Medica“ Zenica has faced. By her dedicated work and investment, she managed to save all existing services as well as to expand and open new services of „Medica“ Zenica, and to develop standards and policies in BiH in this field in order to respond most adequately the needs of our target groups.

Apart from this world recognition Sabiha Husić has been awarded with many other recognitions such as the recognition for her peace-building work by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, San Diego, USA in 2013 and Volonteurope – Active Citizens of Europe Award and professional work in 2009 as well as many other international and BiH awards.
